What Are the Four Zones?

Ocean Zones gives students a shared language for how their body and feelings are doing. Instead of saying "good" or "bad," students can say which zone they are in and choose tools that match.

💙 Blue Zone – Low Energy

Bodies in the Blue Zone feel tired, slow, or low. Kids might say they feel sad, worn out, or like they "just woke up." Blue is not a bad zone — it simply means the body may need gentle wake-up tools.

💚 Green Zone – Ready to Learn

In the Green Zone, kids feel calm, focused, and ready for learning or play. This is the "just right" zone where it is easier to listen, think clearly, and follow directions.

💛 Yellow Zone – Big Energy

Yellow Zone shows up as wiggly, worried, excited, or overwhelmed energy. Kids might be extra silly, nervous, or busy in their bodies. Yellow is a signal that the body needs a few calming or focusing tools.

❤️ Red Zone – Big Feelings

In the Red Zone, feelings are very strong — like anger, panic, or feeling out of control. Red is never "bad" or "naughty"; it is a signal that a child needs safety, connection, and powerful tools to let big energy out in safe ways.

How Families Can Use the Zones at Home

1. Use Everyday Language

Try simple questions like, "What zone is your body in right now?" instead of "Are you being good?" This keeps the focus on feelings and needs, not on being in trouble.

2. Notice All Zones

Let kids know that all zones are okay. Grown-ups have Blue, Yellow, and Red moments too. We are not trying to stay in Green all day — we are learning tools for each zone.

3. Practice Tools When Calm

Breathing and movement tools work best when kids have practiced them in the Green Zone first. Try a short practice after dinner or before bedtime.

4. Make a Home Menu of Tools

Work with your child to list 3–5 tools that help their body in each zone: a favorite breath, movement, quiet corner, or comfort item.

Sample Take-Home Sheet Ideas

Schools can print or email short parent information sheets that:

  • Introduce the Four Zones and the four ocean friends (Manny, Stella, Shelly, and Crabby).
  • Explain that all feelings and all zones are welcome.
  • Share 2–3 questions families can ask at home (for example, "What helped your body today?").
  • List a few classroom tools that students might talk about (breathing cards, Calm Corner, strategy cards).
