Our Mission, Our Story, Our Why
Ocean Zones started with a simple observation: the students who struggled most with behavior werent "bad kids." They were dysregulated kidsoverwhelmed by feelings they couldnt name, let alone manage.
We watched capable teachers burn out trying to address constant disruptions. Students were labeled as problems when they were actually drowning in emotions no one had taught them to swim through. We knew there had to be a better way.
Ocean Zones is that better way. Its the flagship curriculum in the Calm Connections SEL system a framework that meets students where they are, validates every feeling they have, and gives them concrete toolsbreathing techniques, sensory supports, and a common languageto navigate their inner world.
Because when students can regulate, they can learn. And when they can learn, everything changes.
Our mission is simple: equip every child with the emotional vocabulary and regulation tools they need to thrivein the classroom and beyond.
We believe:
The ocean is the first "world" in the Calm Connections system and the perfect metaphor for emotions. Sometimes were calm and steady. Sometimes were barely awake, floating quietly. Sometimes were bouncing with waves of excitement. And sometimes, storms come.
Every state is natural. Every state passes. And just like the ocean, we can learn to move with our feelings instead of being pulled under by them.
Our four ocean charactersManny the Manta Ray, Stella the Starfish, Shelly the Seashell, and Crabby the Crabgive children relatable friends who understand exactly how they feel. No judgment. Just understanding and tools.
Ocean Zones incorporates evidence-based breathing techniques adapted for children, polyvagal theory principles (nervous system regulation), trauma-informed design practices, sensory integration strategies, and CASEL-aligned social-emotional competencies.
Our curriculum has been developed through extensive collaboration with classroom teachers, special education specialists, school counselors, and occupational therapists.
Today, Ocean Zones is more than a single lesson or poster set. It is a connected system of tools that work together in classrooms and Calm Corners:
Calm Connections Learning Lab LLC is an educational company based in Oak Harbor, Ohio. We develop research-based, trauma-informed resources that help children build emotional intelligence and self-regulation skills.
Our flagship product, Ocean Zones, is the first themed world in the Calm Connections SEL system. It is currently being piloted in real classroom environments and will launch commercially following evaluation of pilot results. Future worldslike Jungle Zones or Space Zoneswill build on the same proven framework with new characters and stories.
