Morning Meeting Activities

Ocean Zones K-5 SEL Curriculum

Purpose: Daily routines that integrate zone awareness, build community, and start each day with emotional check-ins.

Time Required: 10-15 minutes daily

Structure: Greeting → Check-In → Activity → Message

📅 WEEK-BY-WEEK MORNING MEETING GUIDE

WEEK 1: INTRODUCING OCEAN ZONES

Day 1: Welcome to the Ocean

Greeting: Wave hello to neighbors

Check-In: "Share your name and one thing that makes you happy"

Activity: Ocean movement (sway like seaweed, swim like fish)

Message: "Welcome to Ocean Zones! This year we'll learn about our feelings and how to take care of ourselves."

Day 2: Four Zones Introduction

Greeting: "Good morning [name], I see you!"

Check-In: Show 1-4 fingers for how you feel (1=great, 4=struggling)

Activity: Introduce zone colors with movements

Message: "All zones are okay! Every zone teaches us something."

Day 3: Meet the Characters

Greeting: Swim like a manta ray to greet someone

Check-In: "Which ocean animal would you be today?"

Activity: Introduce Manny, Shelly, Stella, and Crabby with pictures

Message: "Our ocean friends will help us understand our zones!"

Day 4: Zone Check-In Practice

Greeting: "Good morning, ocean friend!"

Check-In: Point to zone color that matches your feeling

Activity: Practice saying "I'm in the ___ Zone" with partners

Message: "Naming our zone is the first step to taking care of ourselves."

Day 5: Week 1 Review

Greeting: Choose your own greeting style

Check-In: Share one thing you learned this week

Activity: Sing ocean zones song (to tune of "Twinkle Twinkle"):

"Blue and green and yellow, red,

These are zones inside my head,

All of them are okay to feel,

All my feelings are real,

Blue and green and yellow, red,

Now I know what's in my head!"

Message: "You learned so much this week! I'm proud of you!"

Day 1: Blue Zone Introduction

Greeting: Gentle, slow high-fives (tired/low energy)

Activity: Read excerpt from "Manny's Quiet Rest Day"

Message: "Blue Zone = tired, low energy. When we're here, we need gentle energizing."

Day 2: Blue Zone Bodies

Greeting: Slow-motion greeting

Check-In: "How does your body feel right now?"

Activity: Body scan - notice breathing, heartbeat, muscles

Message: "In Blue Zone, our bodies feel tired and low energy."

Day 3: Manny's Manta Glide

Greeting: Glide past each other like manta rays

Check-In: "What's one word for how you feel?"

Activity: Learn and practice Manta Glide breathing (4 counts in, 4 out)

Message: "Breathing helps us stay in the Blue Zone!"

Day 4: Blue Zone Helpers

Greeting: "Good morning, helper!"

Check-In: Share one way you helped someone

Activity: Role-play helping a friend when YOU'RE in Blue Zone

Message: "When we're in Blue Zone, we can help others!"

Day 5: Blue Zone Celebration

Greeting: Gentle fist bumps

Check-In: "Were you in Blue Zone this week? When?"

Activity: Blue Zone drawing - draw yourself in Blue Zone

Message: "This week you learned about Blue Zone. I'm so proud!"

Day 1: Green Zone Introduction

Message: "Green Zone is great. We all need rest and comfort sometimes."

Day 2: Green Zone is Safe

Greeting: Soft, caring greetings

Check-In: Share using pictures instead of words (emotions cards)

Activity: Create a class "cozy corner" together

Message: "When we're in Green Zone, we need safe, quiet spaces."

Day 3: Shelly's Shell Breath

Greeting: Whisper hello

Check-In: Silent check-in (point to feelings chart)

Activity: Practice Gentle Breathing (slow, soft breaths)

Message: "Green Zone tools help us feel a little better."

Day 4: Helping Green Zone Friends

Greeting: "I'm glad you're here today"

Check-In: "What helps you when you're sad?"

Activity: Role-play comforting a friend in Green Zone

Message: "We can help friends in Green Zone by being kind and patient."

Day 5: Green Zone Courage

Greeting: "You are brave" greetings

Activity: Award "Brave Heart" certificates for sharing feelings

Message: "Telling someone you're in Green Zone takes courage!"

Check-In: "How much energy do you have? Show with your body!"

Activity: Notice Yellow Zone body signs (fast heartbeat, wiggly, giggly)

Message: "Yellow Zone gives us energy, but we need to use it safely."

Day 3: Stella's Sunshine Breath

Greeting: Spin and greet

Check-In: "On a scale of 1-10, how much energy do you have?"

Activity: Practice Sunshine Sparkle Breathing (stretch out, breathe, pull in)

Message: "We can have Yellow Zone energy AND control!"

Day 4: Safe Celebrating

Greeting: Controlled celebration greetings

Check-In: Share something you're excited about

Activity: Practice "safe celebrating" - excited but aware of others

Message: "In Yellow Zone, we celebrate safely so everyone has fun!"

Day 5: Yellow Zone Fun

Greeting: Dance greeting

Check-In: "What was your favorite Yellow Zone moment?"

Activity: Yellow Zone freeze dance - dance with control, freeze on signal

Message: "Yellow Zone is wonderful when we use our tools!"

Message: "Red Zone happens to everyone. Big feelings are okay."

Day 2: Red Zone is NOT Bad

Greeting: "You're safe here" greetings

Check-In: Share a time an adult helped you when upset

Activity: Draw what helps you when you have big feelings

Message: "Red Zone doesn't mean you're bad. It means you need help."

Day 3: Red Zone Safety

Greeting: Gentle, predictable greetings

Check-In: "What's one thing that makes you feel safe?"

Activity: Tour safe spaces in classroom (calm corner, quiet spot)

Message: "When you're in Red Zone, we keep you and others safe."

Day 4: Crabby's Calm Tools

Greeting: Peaceful morning

Check-In: "What helps you calm down?"

Activity: Practice Stop Pressure breathing (hold hands together, breathe)

Message: "Red Zone tools help us when we have big feelings."

Day 5: Red Zone Recovery

Greeting: "I'm proud of you" greetings

Check-In: "Can you come back from big feelings?" (Yes!)

Activity: Role-play: feeling upset → using tools → feeling better

Message: "You can learn to manage Red Zone. It takes practice!"
